Tarot reading about a relationship

Not every relationship question is a love question. Most of the ones people actually carry are about a parent, a sibling, a friend who has gone quiet, a colleague who takes up more room in your head than they should. Those relationships have the same features that make tarot useful — a history, an unsaid thing, a role you fell into and never chose — without the romantic framing that most tarot writing assumes. This page is for those. If the question is about a romantic partner or your love life, the love reading is the one that fits.

When this is useful

Useful when you cannot see a relationship from inside it. A pattern that repeats with the same person, a distance that appeared without an argument, a dynamic you can describe but not explain. It is particularly good at the question of what you are carrying that was never yours: family roles are the clearest example, and they are almost invisible from within.

When it is not

It cannot tell you what the other person is thinking, and any reading that appears to is describing your model of them rather than them. It is also the wrong tool for anything involving harm — a reading is not a safety assessment and should not be used as one.

How it works

  1. Ask about your side of it

    The cards have access to you and not to them. "What am I not saying" produces something usable; "what does he think of me" produces a reading about your own guesses, dressed up.

  2. Three cards for a history

    Relationships that have gone somewhere over time read well across past, present and future positions. A single card is better when the question is about one specific thing between you.

  3. Watch for the unsaid

    The interpretation looks at how the cards modify each other, and in relationship readings the tension between two cards is usually where the thing nobody has mentioned is sitting.

Common questions

Is this different from a love reading?
Yes. The love reading is written for romantic relationships and your love life. This one is for everything else — family, friends, a specific person you cannot read — where the same questions about roles, patterns and unsaid things apply without the romantic framing.
Can the cards tell me how someone feels about me?
They can describe how the situation reads from where you are standing, which is a real and useful thing. What they cannot do is report another person’s interior. A reading that seems to is telling you about your own expectations, and it is worth noticing which.
What if the relationship has already ended?
Those often read better than live ones, because there is nothing to protect. "What am I still carrying" and "what did I never say" are both good questions for a relationship that is over, and neither needs the other person to participate.
Should I share the reading with them?
