Page of Swords upright
A lithe figure crosses rugged high ground holding a sword upright in both hands, looking back over his shoulder. The clouds behind are, in Waite's phrase, "collocated wildly"; birds fly and the grass bends in the wind. Waite reads him as vigilance, overseeing, examination — and, less charmingly, spying. Upright he is the mind at its most curious and least experienced: full of questions, quick to notice, and not yet in possession of the judgement that would tell him which observations matter.
Page of Swords reversed
Reversed, the alertness turns unkind or turns to noise. That is gossip — information collected and passed on for the pleasure of holding it — or suspicion that has stopped being observation and become a habit. It also reverses into being caught unprepared, which Waite names directly: the watcher surprised, the question asked at the wrong moment, the cleverness that had not thought one step further.

The stage of finding out — questions, curiosity, an interest that is more mental than settled. Reversed: reading too much into things, or talking about it more than to them.

The person who notices everything and reports it. Reversed: that becoming gossip, or suspicion aimed at people who have not earned it.

Learning a field, research, a role that is mostly watching and asking. Reversed: half-understood information passed on with confidence.

Studying a financial decision rather than making one — reading, comparing, learning the vocabulary. Reversed: acting on something skim-read.

Its virtue is that it has not decided yet. Its risk is mistaking having noticed something for having understood it, which is the specific failure of this suit at this rank.

- Traditionally both — pages are messengers as well as ranks, and Waite's reading of vigilance and examination fits either. In practice the news reading suits questions about information arriving, the person reading suits questions about who is involved, and the energy is the same: alert, curious, unproven.
- What does the Page of Swords mean reversed?
- Alertness turning into gossip or suspicion, or the watcher caught unprepared — the clever remark that had not thought one move further.
- Why is he looking backwards?
- His body faces one way and his head another, which is the posture of somebody checking they are not being followed. Waite's word for it is vigilance, and it is the rank's weakness as much as its strength: he is watching everything and committed to nothing.
