The Star upright
A naked woman kneels by a pool pouring water back into it and onto the land, under one great star and seven small ones. She is unguarded, which is the card’s condition rather than its risk: The Star follows The Tower, and what it describes is the openness available once there is nothing left to defend. Upright, it indicates renewal after difficulty — hope that is quiet rather than optimistic, clarity about what matters, and the beginning of replenishment. It is one of the deck’s most favourable cards and one of its gentlest. It promises nothing dramatic; it promises that the worst of it has passed.
The Star reversed
Reversed, the light is hard to find. Discouragement, faith worn through, the sense that the difficult stretch has simply gone on too long to still be a stretch. It can indicate cynicism formed as protection — a person who has decided not to hope in order not to be disappointed, which is understandable and costs more than it saves. It can also mean disconnection from whatever used to make the work meaningful, with the activity continuing and the reason for it gone.
What it means for…
Love
Renewal and openness — a relationship healing after difficulty, or the return of the capacity to be vulnerable with someone. Reversed: guardedness after being hurt, or a partnership where hope has quietly been given up on.
Relationships
Reconciliation, forgiveness, and the slow re-establishment of trust. The Star favours the honest, undefended conversation. Reversed: a relationship where someone has stopped expecting anything and has not said so.
Career
Renewed purpose, inspiration, a direction that finally makes sense after a period of drift. Good for creative work and for anything requiring genuine belief in it. Reversed: disillusionment, or work that has lost its meaning without losing its demands.
Money
Gradual recovery and a return of confidence after a difficult period. Not a card of sudden gain — its subject is the restoration of stability. Reversed: financial discouragement, or having given up on a goal that was actually still reachable.
Personal growth
Healing that happens when you stop bracing. The Star is the card of restoration rather than effort: the work here is allowing recovery rather than driving it, which is harder for most people than the striving it follows.
In a reading
As feelings
As a feeling, The Star is calm, open and hopeful — affection without defensiveness, the ease of being seen without needing to manage it. Read as another person’s feelings it suggests genuine, gentle regard and a willingness to be vulnerable. Reversed it can mean hope withdrawn, or feelings guarded after disappointment.
As advice
Let yourself be replenished. The Star advises against pushing at this stage — what the situation needs is restoration, honesty and enough openness to accept help. Return to what genuinely nourishes you, and be undefended with the few people who have earned it.
As an outcome
A hopeful, healing outcome. As a result card The Star indicates renewal, clarity and a gradual improvement in circumstances — quiet rather than triumphant, and generally lasting because it is built on recovery rather than momentum.
Yes or no: Yes
A gentle yes. The Star is among the deck’s most favourable cards and indicates the matter goes well, though on a restorative timescale rather than an urgent one. Its yes is about the direction of travel more than about speed.
Symbolism
A woman kneels naked at the water’s edge, one knee on land and one foot on the pool’s surface, pouring from two vessels: one back into the water, one onto the earth in five streams. Above her, one large eight-pointed star and seven smaller ones. Nothing is hidden and nothing is armoured — the vulnerability is the state the card describes rather than a warning within it. Behind her a tree holds a bird, traditionally the ibis of Thoth, marking the return of thought after shock.

- Aquarius — vision, detachment, the long view of what could be.

- Numerology
- Seventeen reduces to eight, the number of power exercised through cycles, and further to one, the number of beginnings. Both readings apply: The Star is a starting point reached through a completed cycle, which is why it lands where it does in the sequence rather than earlier.
The Star with other cards
-
The Star + The Tower
The deck’s own sequence: devastation followed by relief. One of the strongest arguments in the Major Arcana that a hard reading is not a final one.
-
The Star + The Moon
Hope and uncertainty together. The direction is good and the visibility is poor — proceed, slowly, without demanding to see the whole route.
-
The Star + Temperance
Healing doubled, patiently. A reassuring pair for anyone recovering from something, and a firm argument against rushing the recovery.
Common questions
- What does The Star mean after a difficult reading?
- That the worst has passed and recovery has started. It follows The Tower in the deck’s ordering, and that placement carries most of its meaning: it is the card of what becomes possible once the collapse is over and there is nothing left to protect.
- Is The Star about wishes coming true?
- It is often read that way and the reading is a little thin. Its subject is hope and replenishment rather than wish fulfilment — clarity about what matters and the restoration of the capacity to want things. That is more useful and less immediately satisfying.
- What does The Star reversed mean?
- Discouragement, or faith worn through by a difficult period that has lasted longer than expected. It frequently indicates cynicism adopted as protection. The card’s counsel reversed is the same as upright, delivered to someone less able to hear it: rest, and let recovery happen.
