Three cards in a line: past, present, future. It is the most widely used spread in tarot and the most widely misread, because people read the three cards separately and then wonder why the result feels like three unrelated fortunes. The spread only works as a sequence. The first card is not "your past" in general, it is the part of your history still acting on this question. The third is not a prophecy, it is where the line is heading if the present continues — which is exactly the kind of statement worth acting on, because it can be changed.
When this is useful
Use it when a situation has a history and you cannot see how you arrived. It is the right spread for a pattern that keeps repeating, for a relationship or a job that has drifted somewhere you did not choose, and for any question where "why is this happening" matters more than "what should I do". Three positions give the interpretation something a single card cannot have: a shape, with cause running through it.
When it is not
Overkill for a simple or immediate question, and unsuited to genuine either/or decisions — the positions describe one line through time, not two options side by side.
