Wheel of Fortune upright
The Wheel is the deck’s acknowledgement that not everything is a consequence of your choices. Upright, it marks a turning point arriving from outside — an opportunity, a coincidence, a change in circumstances that alters the terrain you have been carefully planning across. It generally reads favourably, less because fortune is kind than because the wheel has been at the bottom for a while and is moving. Its more useful message is structural: what is happening now is a phase, not a permanent state, which is worth remembering both when things are difficult and when they are going unusually well.
Wheel of Fortune reversed
Reversed, the turn goes against you or refuses to come. It can indicate bad timing — the right move made in the wrong month — or a setback that has nothing to do with any error on your part, which is harder to accept than a mistake. It also describes resistance: gripping a phase that is ending, running the same cycle again because you have not changed the thing that produces it. Reversed asks whether you are unlucky or simply repeating something, since the two feel identical from inside.
What it means for…
Love
A relationship at a turning point, often triggered by circumstance rather than by either person. Chance meetings, timing that suddenly works after years of not. Reversed: timing that will not cooperate, or the same relationship pattern arriving in a new person.
Relationships
The natural cycles of closeness and distance in long relationships, and the futility of treating a low phase as a verdict. Reversed, a family pattern repeating across generations because nobody has interrupted it.
Career
An unexpected opening, a change of circumstances, an industry shifting under you. Favours flexibility over planning. Reversed: a stalled period, or being caught by a change you had good reason to see coming.
Money
Fluctuation. Money arriving or leaving through circumstance rather than effort — a windfall, an unexpected cost, a market move. The Wheel counsels building for the turn rather than assuming the current phase is the permanent one.
Personal growth
Learning to distinguish what is yours to control from what is not, and to stop spending effort on the second category. The Wheel is the deck’s argument for holding plans loosely — not fatalism, but the recognition that adaptability outperforms prediction.
In a reading
As feelings
As a feeling, the Wheel is changeable — feelings in motion rather than settled, subject to circumstance and mood. Read as another person’s feelings it suggests something shifting, which cuts both ways: warming if it has been cold, cooling if it has been warm. Not a card to build certainty on.
As advice
Move with it. Where the change is already happening, adapt rather than brace, and take the opening while it is open — Wheel opportunities have a short season. Where you are at the bottom, the practical counsel is to keep going long enough for the phase to end, because this card’s central claim is that it will.
As an outcome
Change, in your favour more often than not. As a result card the Wheel indicates the situation turns — a shift in circumstances rather than a resolution you engineer — and that the new position will itself be temporary, which is worth planning for.
Yes or no: Yes
A yes that belongs partly to circumstance. The Wheel indicates the matter turns favourably, and is honest that the mechanism is timing rather than merit. Since the same wheel keeps moving, treat a yes here as a window rather than a settlement.
Symbolism
A great wheel hangs in the sky lettered TARO — read round, also ROTA, Latin for wheel. Around it are the four fixed signs of the zodiac as the creatures of Ezekiel: man, eagle, lion and bull, each reading a book, watching from positions that do not move. On the wheel itself Anubis rises, the serpent Typhon descends and the sphinx sits at the top holding a sword, unmoved because it has understood the mechanism. Nothing at the rim is stable; only the corners and the centre are.

- Numerology
- Ten completes the cycle of one through nine and returns to one with a zero attached: an ending that is also a beginning at a different scale. Tens across the deck mark the finish of a phase and the pressure of what follows it. Here the number is literally the shape of the card.
Wheel of Fortune with other cards
-
Wheel of Fortune + The Tower
Change from outside, twice over, and the second one does not negotiate. Prepare rather than plan.
-
Wheel of Fortune + Justice
Luck and consequence together. The turn is arriving, and how it lands has more to do with your prior conduct than the Wheel alone would suggest.
-
Wheel of Fortune + The Hanged Man
A wheel that will not turn on your schedule. This pair counsels waiting deliberately rather than forcing the moment.
Common questions
- Does the Wheel of Fortune mean good luck?
- It leans favourable, but its subject is change rather than fortune specifically. The more reliable reading is that the current phase is ending. Whether that is good depends entirely on which phase you are in, which is why the card is encouraging in a bad stretch and unsettling in a good one.
- Is the Wheel about fate?
- It describes the part of life that is not authored by you — timing, circumstance, other people’s decisions. It does not claim everything is predetermined. Its practical position is that some things are outside your control and that effort spent there is wasted.
- What does the Wheel reversed mean?
- Either a turn going against you, or a wheel that has jammed — the same cycle repeating. The second reading is the more useful one: if a situation keeps recurring in different clothes, the Wheel reversed suggests looking for the part you keep contributing to it.
